What makes the garage flooring industry unique in comparison to other home-service industries?
Seamans: Other home services companies such as painting, plumbing, and electrical have been around for decades. The custom-floor industry is brand new and you get to get in on the ground floor and make an impact. It’s a fast-growing industry. People never really saw their garage as a part of their home, they saw it as a storage area. There’s been a mindset shift with people, almost like bottled water in the 90s, where everyone was drinking tap water and then bottled water came out and everyone was like, “why would we pay money for that?” Fast forward 10 years later, everybody’s drinking bottled water and nobody wants to drink tap water. The garage has been through a similar process and people see it as a living space now. They go there for holiday dinners, Thanksgiving dinners, all those things, and they’re being converted into man caves or rental properties. When you open up your garage door, you should be proud of your floor, you shouldn’t be trying to close your door as fast as humanly possible because you’re scared of what people may or may not see in your garage.
How big can Garage Kings get?
Seamans: In 2017, we (Jamie and Tim) really decided that this was way bigger than just the two of us and we wanted to share what we were into. We believed in it so much that we gave up our own install business and we started expanding in 2017 to help get other people into the business. Now we have nearly 50 locations in the United States and Canada. I can see this growing to hundreds if not thousands of locations over time. It’s going to be a network across the United States and Canada of people putting down amazing floors and giving people amazing experiences. Garage Kings does floors that are going to last and help increase the value of homes for when homeowners go to sell them.
What sort of support do you offer Garage Kings franchisees?
Seamans: We really focus on the digital side of marketing, as that’s where most people have hiccups, in the systems and sales part of it. One of the amazing things about our system is that you only need three people: a sales guy and two installers. That’s it. We have lots of successful people across Canada and the United States doing this and it’s the most rewarding thing in the world when you’re helping people be successful. I went out to the 15 first locations and really helped them get going. It’s bigger than yourself because you’re helping families, every franchisee has a family and they have employees that all have families, and you’re making a huge impact in their lives.
Who makes an ideal Garage Kings franchisee?
Seamans: You’ve got to have a “do it” mentality. You’ve got to be the kind of person who is willing to put some hard work into it. The first year there’s a lot of blood, sweat, and tears poured into it and that’s OK, right? You just need to be willing to do the work. Anybody can give you the right workout plan, you can have a personal coach to show what weights you’ve got to lift in order to better yourself, but we can’t do the push-ups for you. So the most critical point is you’ve got to follow the system. This is how you’re going to be successful. We also love people who have been in the military and people who have owned franchises before because Garage Kings is a walk in the park compared to a lot of these other businesses. We have guys in the network who have never owned a business before, they’re in their mid-20s and they’re doing phenomenally. So anybody who is really willing to do the work, this is a good fit for you.
